Thousands attend active West Midlands community event

The first ever BBC West Midlands Community Games, held at Alexander Stadium at the end of June has been hailed a great success, with 1,000s of happy attendees getting the chance to do taster sessions in over 40 sports and activities.

The Community Games are designed to inspire physical activity in communities in a very friendly way, with local people being able to take part in short “taster or have a go” sessions offered by many different local activity providers.

Birmingham Community Leisure Trust (BCLT), the people who run nine sports and leisure centres on behalf of Birmingham City Council (BCC), were represented at the event with a stall promoting gymnastics. And the BCLT team were lucky enough to have a star guest helping them out on the day: Commonwealth gymnastics silver medallist, Lucy Stanhope.

Lucy said:

“I really enjoyed the BBC West Midlands Community Games event. It was great to see so many young people interested in gymnastics and having a go at the fun activities the BCLT team had set up.

“It was good fun to help out on the stall, sign a few autographs and see so many smiling faces at an event, which I hope becomes a regular fixture for the people of the West Midlands.”

All participants in activities received a sticker for every activity they took part in, and anyone who collected 8 stickers got a free Community Games Medal.

Charllie Moore, Aquatic and Dry Course Activator for BCLT set up the stall along with Beth Chamberlain and Doreen Smith. Charllie said:

"It was a great event! Thank you for the organisers for having us there on the day. Everything ran so smoothly and we were so lucky with the weather.

“Thank you to Lucy for her help on our stall. I know how inspiring it must be for youngsters to meet an actual Commonwealth silver medallist, especially as the whole city builds towards 2022 and the staging of the games in Birmingham.”

BCLT runs nine centres throughout the city on behalf of BCC. Its latest facility, Ladywood Leisure Centre is due to open on August 9th, with a 25m, 8-lane competition standard swimming pool, 130-station gym and extensive range of workout classes.
