Alexander Stadium is located in Perry Barr, north-west Birmingham in the West Midlands and has a permanent capacity of 18,000 people.

About Alexander Stadium

In May 2020, the stadium underwent a £72 million redevelopment and was completed in April 2022 ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where the venue proudly hosted the Opening & Closing Ceremonies, as well as the athletics and para athletics competitions at Birmingham 2022.

The redevelopment has made the Alexander Stadium the largest facility of its kind in the UK and reaffirmed Birmingham as the national home of athletics. The £72 million upgrade has enhanced facilities for the local community, existing and prospective tenants to use for generations to come.

Additional funding has been secured to deliver further enhancements at the stadium and Perry Park. Read more about the proposals.

Our History

Alexander Stadium is named after William Whiteway Alexander (1852 to 1933), who played a large role in the early development of Birchfield Harriers and athletics in Birmingham.

The original Alexander Stadium was built on the site of the Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium in 1927.

In 1976, the stadium then became the Perry Barr Greyhound Racing Track after the construction of the new Alexander Stadium in Perry Park. The venue was officially opened in June 1978 and went onto become a host to regional, national and international athletics events.

In May 2020, the venue underwent a £72 million redevelopment, with the stadium completed in May 2022 ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
