Wyndley Leisure Centre - Improvement Work

Oct 05, 2021 | News

We are delighted to announce that we will soon be making some exciting changes to Wyndley Leisure Centre.

On 4th October 2021, construction works will commence at the leisure centre to deliver the following planned improvements:

  • An upgrade of the existing full-size hockey pitch up to a Federation International Hockey standard
  • Improvements to the adjacent pitch up to 4G standard
  • New fencing around the pitches that will enable safe and secure operation all year round
  • Enhanced floodlighting to the pitches
  • Repairs and improvements to the running track

The works have been developed in line with a commitment to improve sporting facilities across the city and increase participation across all age groups in physical activity, as well as in anticipation of the venue potentially being used as an official training facility for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Birmingham 2022 will announce which facilities have been selected as official training venues later this year, and we will notify you once the outcome has been published.

The construction works will be phased, with the first phase commencing on 4th October 2021 and completing in late December 2021, and the second phase commencing in April 2022 and completing in mid-May 2022. During the construction works, there will be a requirement to temporarily close the hockey and football pitches and athletics track for set periods of time. It is anticipated that the pitches will be closed between 4th October 2021 and late December 2021, and the track between April 2022 and mid-May 2022. We are working with the contractor to ensure that these temporary closures are kept to an absolute minimum, to reduce disruption to you and fellow users.

Week commencing 4 October 2021, a planning application will be submitted to Birmingham City Council to seek approval to upgrade the existing floodlighting for the hockey and football pitches. Once the application has been processed it will be available to be viewed and commented on via Birmingham City Council’s Planning Online website: https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/planningonline. If approval is granted by Birmingham City Council, the upgraded floodlights will be installed as part of the first phase of construction works.

We recognise that there will be some disruption whilst the improvement works are undertaken and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused. We would also like to thank you for your understanding and patience during this time.

We will be providing regular progress updates on this webpage so please check back to find out how the improvement works are taking shape. Should you have any questions or require any further information in the meantime, please click here to contact us.
